The days are starting to lengthen, the birds are singing again and nature is getting its color back. The sun is finally shining again. Spring is there! Spring begins and with it, the spring classics! For many, that annoying winter without a race lasted too long. An eternity. That’s why the opening weekend is always special. When in the Omloop het Nieuwsblad the first Flemish cobbled hills appear, spring has really begun. The Haaghoek, the Paddestraat and the Jagerij. Well, it’s back to racing, isn’t it!
Spring classics 2022
The one-day classics really get our hearts racing. The spring begins when Het Volk – the Omloop het Nieuwsblad of course – is held and it really kicks off when the Poggio is turned up in ‘La Primavera’. The cobbled short climbs in Flanders and the legendary Paris-Roubaix. The ‘Sixth Monument’ Strade Bianche with its white steratti and the twists and turns in the South Limburg countryside in the Amstel Gold Race. And the Brabantse Pijl and Waalse Pijl as a prelude to ‘La Doyenne’. Liège-Bastogne-Liège may not be the most fun, but it is the toughest spring classic there is.
Grand Tours 2022
The Giro d’Italia is the most beautiful. Nowhere is there such a special love for the Grand Tour as in Italy. The Tour de France is the most important. The most prestigious where the stakes are highest. And the Vuelta a España is the toughest. Steep goat trails with more uphill finishes than you care to see. Oh, how we love it.
Other cycling races and monuments
But also in 2022, Voorjaarsklassiekers.be will go further than just the Grand Tours and the main spring classics. Also all attention to the smaller Flemish classics. And for Paris-Nice. The Tirreno-Adriatico and the classics later in the year. La Clásica San Sebastian has become a true classic in recent years and in October, according to tradition, with the Tour of Lombardy, the ‘Race of the Falling Leaves’, the final monument awaits as a delicious dessert.
