Preview cycling classic 2021
The cycling season really begins with the Opening Weekend of the spring classics 2021, the Omloop het Nieuwsblad, February 27, and Kuurne Brussel Kuurne the day after. The first real appointment of the season. Flanders as the decor. Windy roads, hills and cobblestones on the menu. Or as Michel Wuyts will say at the beginning of the broadcast: “day ladies and gentlemen, I’m glad it’s racing again!
Taking in all the information and news for weeks on end. F5ing all cycling websites repeatedly in the hope that a new piece of news flashes by and listening to the podcasts of Laurens ten Dam, our friends from De Rode Lantaarn or Cyclingnews even for a second time. Or for a third time. The spring classics are already locked in your calendar. Don’t worry if your mother-in-law plans her birthday on the Sunday of Gent-Wevelgem. Or even worse, during the Ronde. That’s impossible, because even if you’re not there yourself with muscle pain from the cyclo the day before (at the time of writing we unfortunately expect that the entire spring will be run without public, ed.) – this Sunday is sacred and you sit with friends all day in front of the tube.
With your notebook, you draw the favourites of the spring classics. Where am I going to put Julian Alaphilippe? Do I save him for the Ardennes – or do I play him in Milan Sanremo? Jakob Fuglsang is already driving everyone to fries in mid-February, I hear you thinking. Should I play him in the Strade Bianche right away? And which riders will I use in the Omloop. That beautiful Omloop. The Omloop het Nieuwsblad, as it is called in full. In our eyes still just the People. The first, so an important one. The first, so one of the most beautiful. It’s finally back to racing!
